A Long History

The Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Command (MWR) has a long history of improving the military community’s quality of life. Beginning in World War I, the Salvation Army sisters and Red Cross volunteers were the forerunners of today’s MWR specialists.

MWR operates under the command that soldiers deserve a life balance and are entitled to the same quality of life as the society they are pledged to defend.

Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation

Among many programs and facilities, MWR builds and operates golf courses, softball fields, child care centers, fitness centers, and libraries. MWR brings concerts and celebrities to Posts, and creates clubs and performing arts programs. Other programs include child and family programs, travel opportunities and social events.

Freedom Crossing & MWR

In addition to creating a haven for families and friends to get together, shop, dine, and play, Freedom Crossing will serve as the social gathering place for the Fort Bliss military community and will play host to community celebrations and events throughout the year.

The addition of Freedom Crossing at Fort Bliss is projected to more than double the funds available to MWR programs at Fort Bliss.
